Design Technology

Design technology is defined as "designing and making a functional product, for a specific purpose"

At Holy Trinity, our aim is to provide our children with a broad and balanced curriculum which gives them the opportunity to engage in a plethora of activities. Design Technology is vitally important in achieving this goal as it requires the children to call upon a range of disciplines, including; Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. is defined as "designing and making a functional product, fit for a specific purpose". Design Technology prepares children for the real world by giving them skills such as; resilience, problem-solving, analysing and thinking critically and creatively. The subject encourages children to think about others rather than themselves and they learn how to meet the needs of others by researching and testing. 
At Holy Trinity we want our pupils to become lifelong learners. We want our children to think logically and work as a team, to become problem solvers and to be imaginative. Our Design Technology curriculum is embedded into each year group's Adventure curriculum which excites and inspires the children. Embedding the curriculum in this way gives children the opportunity to make links between subjects. Our Design Technology curriculum has been designed so that children complete projects that are relevant to them, often involving the local area. 
We currently follow a scheme called 'Projects on a Page' which is the basis of our DT curriculum. However, it has been adapted to fit with our school values and intended outcomes. There are 5 areas of learning which all children will have covered by the time they leave Holy Trinity. Each project that the children complete relates to one of the 5 key areas:
  • Textiles
  • Mechanisms
  • Structures
  • Electrical systems 
  • Cooking and nutrition
Each area of learning provides the children with the opportunity to learn new skills and build on previous learning through a 'design, make, evaluate' approach.
